Meet the Homeowner

Ruby Cosby has lived in her home for over 40 years and has seen the composition of her neighborhood change. She was born in Alabama outside of Tuskegee and moved to Atlanta in 1960 to attend Grady Memorial Nursing School. After graduating she went on to practice as a nurse for over 50 years. "I worked everywhere," she says. Toward the end of her career, she taught at Atlanta Tech for 15 years, retiring in 2006.

Ms Cosby began having trouble getting in and out of her home in 2016. She is on dialysis and has to leave the house often for appointments. Her family comes in and out of town to help her go to appointments, but the stairs and slope of her driveway have proved to be a major challenge for both her and her family. A ramp was installed many years ago, but it was not built properly and is now a hazard.

Ms Cosby says that having a functional ramp and different route to the street would help her be more independent. She has experienced a significant loss of mobility and has to use a walker in her home. Ruby looks forward to the day when she can come outside and enjoy fresh air and her yard. "It's been almost five years since I've just walked around my house," she said. "Every time I go out, I'm afraid I'll fall."
