About Beat 4 Beat

Mission

Beat 4 Beat’s mission is to develop confidence and community for underserved youth in Central Texas through after-school music education. Taught by local musicians, our curriculum is inspired by students’ interests, providing opportunities for expression and empowerment.

Beat 4 Beat is an Austin-based nonprofit that offers after-school music classes to underserved students in low-income schools. We provide local musicians with a well-paying side job,      mentoring and teaching classes in music, production, and songwriting. In the past year students have shown a strong interest in podcasts, so we created a curriculum for producing a podcast (with music, of course!).

Beat 4 Beat has been a constant in Austin ISD, Del Valle ISD, and other after-school programs for the past decade. Our teachers and staff have built relationships with students and their families, and we look forward to returning to our regulars each year.

Though school districts are usually able to pay for program fees through federal grants, many can no longer afford the same after-school programs, as budgets have changed following the pandemic. We wish to fully fund our program, so that we never need to charge program fees again.

Our programs offer a unique opportunity for students to build confidence. Our classes create a safe space for creative self-expression, an outlet that has massive mental and emotional health benefits. This program has even been shown to reduce rates of recidivism in students by more than 90%.

It is heartbreaking to imagine a year without any of our precious students making music with our teachers and performing their new creations at the end-of-year showcase concert.

Beat 4 Beat’s after-school class costs approximately $5,000 per school year, and we typically serve about 40-50 classes across 20 school campuses each year. In addition to Austin-area school districts, we serve educational and community centers, such as the Jewish Community Center, YMCA locations, and groups of homeschool students.

We are reaching out to the community to help fund a portion of the 2022-2023 school year, as several districts have contracted for fewer programs due to budget cuts. With the generosity of our community, we can continue positively impacting the lives of our most underserved student populations and their families.

For $5,000 per class, Beat 4 Beat can provide its programming as normal for the 2022-2023 school year. Music has a profound effect on our students, and the impact we can collectively make on the next generation is immeasurable because there is no limit to the positive. Please, consider joining us in our mission, and give these kids a “voice” they never even knew they had.

History

Beat 4 Beat’s music classes give at-risk students in after-school programs a positive musical outlet while building creative problem solving, group awareness, confidence, peer support, and interpersonal communication skills.

Beat 4 Beat was founded by Mark Turk in November 2014. Mark had been teaching music classes for public and private schools, as well as private music lessons on bass, guitar, piano, and voice, since 2007. After working with at-risk students within the Austin Independent School District, Mark saw how beneficial music was to them and how great the need was for support of music education in public schools. His students gained new friendships, attended classes more regularly, and showed more interest in academics. This inspired him to found Beat 4 Beat (formerly known as Beyond the Grade).

Beat 4 Beat has been providing after-school music classes in underserved schools since

2014. Employing well over 20 teachers, B4B currently serves students in 30+ locations through 60 music classes per week in a range of formats including personal instrumental instruction, digital music production classes, rock band classes, and pre-school music classes.

Over the past few years, B4B has developed new programming, instruction resources and outcomes tracking, which are informing and developing quality, and allowing the organization to scale successfully.

Programs

B4B provides music lessons and rock band classes in semester-long placements of 2.5-3 hours, twice a week, with up to 20 students per class.

Music classes are offered for guitar, drums, keyboard, choir, and digital audio production, and are designed to challenge beginner to intermediate skill levels. The curriculum and pace of the class reflect the interests and potential of the students, in the context of songs they like. The delivery is intended to truly engage our students, create a lifelong relationship with music, and bring them greater cultural awareness.

The classes foster confidence and self-esteem by allowing students "on the job training" while sharing the stage with local, national, and internationally renowned musicians. This allows students to see music as a tangible creative force that can be an active part of their daily lives.

Students experience and create music through instruments and digital platforms.

Throughout the semester, professional musicians and bands visit the classrooms as guest teachers. Their workshops provide an opportunity for students to explore musical concepts in different contexts and expose them to new role models and mentors in music. B4B students have opportunities to perform alongside professional musicians at showcases and events throughout the year.
