| This is the classic wooden tabletop baseball game that plays like a pinball machine, challenging players to score with the deft “swing” of the bat. A 1/2"-diameter steel marble is “pitched” into the field of play by a spring-loaded plunger and descends the sloping field toward a wooden bat operated by the quick flip of a steel batting lever. The right touch when “hitting” launches the ball into one of six single, two double, two triple, or two home run spaces—all while avoiding six out spaces that deposit a marble in a tray for another at-bat. Outs, innings, and players on-base are marked with 1" steel pegs while the score is kept by two hand-turned scoring wheels built into the game’s scoreboard. Evoking the ballparks of yesteryear, the spectator stands are decorated with scores of the day’s games, a number of “local” business ads, and pennants. Abbett (1926-2015) Late Day Woodcock, 1978 signed and dated "Abbett 1978" lower right 433/580 Robert Abbett, born in Indiana in 1926, is best known for his depictions of sporting dogs, fly-fishing, and Western life. He began his career as an advertising illustrator, attending night and weekend classes at both the Chicago Academy of Fine Art and the American Academy of Art where he found himself drawn to editorial and advertising art. In 1953 he moved from Chicago to Connecticut to be closer to the editorial markets. There he illustrated for “Argosy,” “The Woman's Home Companion,” “Sports Afield,” “Reader's Digest,” and “True” magazines. He also worked with several West Coast motion picture studios and drew covers for many of the leading paperback publishers. Robert Abbett was commissioned to paint his first animal portrait of “Luke” in 1970. It was with this painting that he transitioned from working as an illustrator to a full-time gallery artist. Abbett is recognized as a master in the field of sporting dog portraiture. |
