The Austin Center for Grief & Loss is hosting the only camp of its kind in Austin. Camp Red Bird is a bereavement summer day camp for children and teens ages 6-17 who have experienced the death of a parent, sibling, or primary caregiver.
It is a safe place where kids can laugh, cry, play, create, remember the person who died, learn that it is okay to grieve, and to understand that they are not alone. It is a place where they can feel ‘normal’, because everyone there has been through something similar and understands what it’s like to lose someone important to them.
Camp Red Bird engages children in therapeutic activities that incorporate art, crafts, nature-based experiences, yoga, and movement to help process feelings of grief. Children who attend camp learn to develop healthy coping skills in a safe and supportive environment.
When:
There will be three sessions for Camp Red Bird.
Session 1: June 10th - 14th (Younger Kids, 6-11)
Teen Camp: July 8th - 12th (Teens, 12-17)
Session 2: July 22nd - 26th (Younger Kids, 6-11)
9:00 am - 3:00 pm
Early drop off available at 8:00 am and late pick-up ends at 5:00 pm.
*Please only sign up for one session per child, we anticipate that Camp Red Bird will be full this summer and would like as many children as possible to experience this type of support*
Staff:
Camp Red Bird is led by a licensed therapist as well as camp counselors.
The curriculum is overseen by a team of grief and loss professionals.
Activities:
There will be opportunities to share in a safe supportive environment.
Activities include nature-based activities, yoga and a variety of fun therapeutic games, arts and crafts.
Meals:
Snacks are provided. Campers will need to bring a sack lunch.
COVID Safety:
The Austin Center for Grief & Loss will be following CDC and City of Austin local health safety guidelines.
