Let's help children of Tellico Plains, TN Get Out for positive mental & physical wellness!

OpGetOut has partnered with Hincapie Sports, The Move, WEDŪ, Haro Bikes, Ski Dock, Mellow Johnny’s & Centurion Boats to provide Bikes For Kids in Tellico Plains, TN.

There’s nothing better than a bike to help children Get Out  — bikes are an inspiring tool for positive mental, physical, and emotional wellness impact! The kids think they are fun and games, but we recognize they are a powerful resource for a healthier, happier child and participating part of the community.

The request for supporting the Tellico Plains community came from a family deeply rooted in the area, followers of the Operation Get Out WEDŪ Bikes For Kids Uvalde campaign, and supporters of the Annual Skyway Outdoor Festival and Cherohala Challenge bike event in Monroe County, TN.

Tellico Plains is in Southeast Tennessee at the gateway to the Cherokee National Forest. The population inside the city limits is less than 1,000 people while the surrounding community adds another 7,500 to the population count. The following information and statistics have been provided to Operation Get Out to better understand the needs of this community and the children that reside here.

  • There are 925 students enrolled in the 4 public schools in grades kindergarten to grade 8. 53% of school-age children live in a non-traditional home setting (e.g., grandparent, another family member, non-family member)

  • Education attainment is low for the residents of Tellico Plains. 36% of adults have completed less than a 9th-grade education while another 26% have completed less than a 12th-grade education.

  • There are correlations between low educational attainment and higher rates of poverty. 33.5% of residents of Tellico Plains live below the poverty level compared to 13% of residents of the State of Tennessee who live below this mark.

  • 42% of children under 11 years of age in Tellico Plains are living below poverty. The median household income in 2022 in Tellico Plains was $28,455.  Interpreted, 97.1% of households in Tellico Plains have a median annual income lower than the State of Tennessee average of $53,320.

  • The health of children is correlated with the home setting and economic status of the household. In Tellico Plains, the elevated number of students living with aging family members with low incomes yields are proportionally higher number of children suffering from the negative effects of adverse childhood experiences. This includes a higher number of children identified as overweight and obese. The rate for children in Tellico Plains is 44.7%. In Tennessee, 39.7% of children under eighteen years of age are identified as obese and/or overweight. This is the 5th highest ranking in the nation and the children of Tellico Plains exceed this rate.

By funding this campaign, our goal is to positively impact the mental, emotional, and physical wellness of the children in Tellico Plains. In many of our own communities, physical activity and the resources to enjoy it are part of the culture; in Tellico Plains, we recognize those resources are greatly limited and we are humbled by the request to support it.
