This year the theme of Heritage Days is "Celebrate Being Local." We invite everyone with a Delmarva address to visit the Museum of Chincoteague Island to come visit your museum. We have two virtual events going on for Heritage Days 2021.

First, we invite you to join The Museum of Chincoteague Island and the Chincoteague Island Arts Organization for a showing of the film "When Assateague Was Home." This film documents life in Assateague Village. Along with the film there will be a tribute to Roy Jones, the last surviving resident of Assateague Village. Roy passed away in 2020 so join us for this tribute him and his life. This event will be shown starting Monday, March 22 at 7:00, P.M. on the CIAO TV You Tube channel.

For our second event, we offer up some of your favorite recepies from some of Chincoteague's best known chefs! In conjunction with Heritage Days 2021, The Museum of Chincoteague Island is re-releasing our "Native Seafood Cookery" cookbook. This cookbook was first released for the Oyster Museum's opening in 1972 and we have had many requests to reprint it. It is now availabled at The Museum of Chincoteague Island and on this Better Unite page. We will have three cooking demonstrations to go with the release of the Cookbook.

First, Laura Davis from the TIme & Thyme food blog will be demonstrating her Shrimp Stuffed Peppers. (Laura's demonstration can be seen on WBOC's Delmarva Life segment on March 25.) We also have Steve Potts from Bill's Prime Seafood and Steaks on Chincoteague, demonstrating Oyster Stuffing. And finally we have the Chincoteague Volunteer Fire Department's own Andy Linton showing us his Carnival favorite Clam Fritters. When the Oyster Museum opened its doors in 1972, one of the items offered for sale in the museum was this cookbook. Over the years, we have had many requests to reprint the cookbook. In 2011 the museum was reborn as The Museum of Chincoteague Island, but the requests for the cookbook never stopped. We have finally answered the call and the book you are holding is a reprint from the original. These recipes, like the concept for the museum itself, came for the kitchens of island women, eager to preserve their island heritage. While some of the things mentioned in the book about the museum no longer apply, the recipes are unchanged and still delicious.
