2023-2024 Service & Education Placement Opportunities

SIGN UP by May 31st: Please sign up for one (1) Service & Education Placement requirement for 2023-2024. Active members are required to sign up for one placement each year.  

NOTE: Jewel Ball & Red Haute are fundraising placements and do not qualify as a Service & Education placement. Service on the Board of Directors counts as a Service & Education placement. Associate, Gold or Silver Members are exempt, but all members are encouraged and welcome to participate! 

Over the summer, the committee chair will contact you with dates, times and other details for your placement. If you have questions regarding specific committee jobs, contact the committee chair listed in the sign-up document.

Tuneful Tales -- SUMMER 2023 PLACEMENT

(Formerly known as Children's Day Art Park)

Chairs: Emily Avila and Karin Foster

2023 Dates: Wednesdays -- June: 7, 14, 28  July: 12, 19 from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

Assist ASO with stroller parking. Monitor the instrument petting zoo by assisting children with handling the instruments and cleaning them off as needed. Arrive by 9:30 for the 10:00 program which ends at noon, then help clean up until 12:30. 

Work a shift at the Austin Central Library Amphitheatre: 701 West Cesar Chavez Street. Validated parking is provided for WSL volunteers.

Orchestra Relations

Chairs: Geri Candow and Allison Shaw

This is a great way to support our ASO musicians directly by helping to provide dinners for them before each dress rehearsal during the concert season. Dress rehearsals are generally scheduled on one Thursday evening each month between September and May.

Volunteers provide store-bought, catered or homemade food items, bringing them to the Long Center backstage by 6 pm. Themes and menus are set by committee chairs over the summer. Committee members participate in three events throughout the season (either providing two food items or working the event, assisting with setup/serving/cleanup, etc.).  Volunteers are welcome to stay until 8 pm to enjoy the rehearsal as well.

Symphony Welcome Committee

Chair: Karen Blackburn

During the concert season, volunteer at three ASO concerts at the Long Center to welcome guests, answer questions, and work the welcome area. If seats are available, volunteers may stay to enjoy the concert at no charge. Arrive by 7:00 p.m. - one hour before the concert begins at 8:00 p.m. Brief training required.

Young People's and Halloween Concerts

Chairs: Jeanie Mayfield and Allison Smith

Volunteers work two shifts during the year at either the Halloween Concert or Young People's Concerts. 

 

The Halloween concert is scheduled for Sunday, October 22nd at 3:00 p.m. (arrive by 2:00 p.m.). Members will help usher families in and out of the hour-long daytime performance as well as take photos at various decorated photo stations.

 

The spring Young People's Concerts (YPC) are scheduled to take place between Monday-Friday for one week during the early Spring 2024 (usually late February - early March). Volunteers will assist with unloading students from buses, directing them to Long Center, and back onto buses after the concerts.  All performances are at the Long Center -- 701 West Riverside, 78704.

Meetings

Chairs: Jane Stein and Charlotte Blakemore

Volunteer for at least two General Meetings, assisting with set-up, welcoming members, handling sign-in, general hosting, and clean-up. One volunteer will send out and manage the online invitations for each meeting. August 2023-May 2024. There are 6-7 General Meetings during the year with lunchtime and evening opportunities. Meeting locations to be determined.

New Member Recruitment & Welcome

Chair: Melanie Mahaffey

Recruit new members into the 2024 class. Duties include planning a recruitment event, updating sponsor forms, entering info into a database, creating a welcome email, coordinating with website and committee chairs, and delivering door hangers in Spring 2024 to new members. Timeframe January-April 2024

Member Enrichment

Tasks may include setup, decorating, clean-up, welcoming members, assisting chairs with logistics, attending events, and outreach to members for participation in events. This is a great way to meet members and encourage engagement in WSL activities. Work at least one member enrichiment event between Aug 2023 - June 2024.

Symphony Sips

Volunteer tasks may include arriving at venue early to post WSL yard sign, assisting with member sign-ups ahead of the event, attending event as a hostess, welcoming members, assisting venue host with logistics, taking pictures at Sips events to share with social media and newsletter committee, etc. Work at least one Sip event between August 2023 - June 2024.

Organize and maintain the WSL mini-storage unit holdings. This is a great opportunity for someone who loves to organize.

Fall 2023 - Work one four-hour shift, with the date flexible at the climate-controlled storage unit on Balcones Drive. Flexible times are available in coordination with Committee Chair.

Newsletter

Chair: Cat Mattingly

Help keep the communication flowing in the WSL by working with the Take Note Newsletter chair to publish a quarterly newsletter about events and our members to the general membership. Writers interview other members, gather photographs, and contribute 1-2 short articles per issue. Self-scheduled wtih deadlines.

Social Media

Chair: Aubrey Williamson

Attend WSL events and as requested, pre-concert talks before ASO concerts. Take photos for social media and create posts for WSL Facebook/Instagram pages to create a buzz about events, concerts, and the people who attend. If seats are available at ASO concerts, volunteers may be able to stay and enjoy the concert at no charge.  For ASO concerts, arrive at 7:00 p.m. - one hour before the concert begins at 8:00 p.m.  Brief training is required. Volunteers need to participate in four opportunities during the year.

Write thank you notes for ASO subscribers, Jewel Ball & Red Haute supporters. Committee members may also be asked to write notes to ASO subscribers and donors. October 2023 after Jewel Ball, February 2024 after Red Haute, and other dates as needed for ASO.

Symphony Done-In-A-Day

Chair: Stephanie Wilson

Volunteer to help the ASO with small tasks as they arise, such as: helping around the ASO office, envelope stuffing/invitation addressing, working various shifts at the 4th of July concert, handing out flyers at Hartman Summer Concerts, helping at the Notable Dinner event in the fall, and working various shifts at the annual ASO season launch party in the spring. Work 2-3 shifts throughout the year, with a flexible schedule.

Assist the VP Technology and VP Technology-elect in event management in Better Unite, membership data transfer between software platforms, event registration for fundraising events. Previous technology experience is not necessary! This committee is for anyone interested in how events are managed, is a problem solver, and curious to learn a user-friendly software program. Flexible times throughout the year.
