| Designed by General George S. Patton Jr. himself, the model 1913 was the last sword issued for military purposes by the US military at the beginning of WW1. After studying fencing at West Point, Patton went on to compete at the 1912 Olympics in the Modern Pentathlon event. Patton’s experience as a fencer informed and influenced the design of this saber. These swords are increasingly rare and this one is in good condition with general wear on the blade and hilt and some fraying of the material on the scabbard. | Sloss Furnaces operates the largest metal arts program in the world. Since establishing the metal arts program in 1985, Sloss has offered workshops, exhibitions, and conferences on all aspects of metalworking—forging, fabricating and casting—but focuses primarily on the use of cast iron as a sculpture medium. This bowl was created as an exercise in applying live native ferns to a wax form. The resulting design was used to create a two-piece rubber pattern. The pattern was then used to make a sand mold. Molten iron reaches approximately 3,000 degrees and is poured from the furnace into the mold through a hole at the bottom. After the casting has cooled, it is broken out of the sand mold, and the finished iron piece brushed and ground to trim excess metal. This bowl was finished in a unique bronze colored wax—a piece of art that took many hours, years of experience, and a team of four artists to create.
