What does “Learn-to-Skate” versus “Learn-to-Play” mean for TSHA?

You may have heard Barb or our coaches refer to these two groups in our program. Here’s how we distinguish between the two!

LEARN TO SKATE

Everyone who comes into our program starts in our “Learn-to-Skate” program, even if they have some skating experience. This is where your participant will get used to being on the ice on skates, get comfortable in all the hockey gear, and learn how to participate in a hockey practice. They’ll get one-on-one attention.

A participant stays in this part of the program as long (or as short) as they need to. We’re developing their confidence and skills so they will be safe when they get into more game-like situations. A big determining factor in whether someone is ready to move out of Learn to Skate and into Learn to Play is how well they can follow instructions. Our coaches determine when someone is ready to transition to the next level.

LEARN TO PLAY

As the participant’s confidence and skills grow, we’ll start challenging them with new organized drills and scrimmages. The environment will be more like a traditional hockey team - with coaches leading drills and less one-on-one attention. We break this group up based on ability, speed, and sometimes size. Safety is our #1 priority.

Once your participant is in the Learn-to-Play portion of our program, there may be more opportunities for scrimmages - both with other teams and within our own team.
