Homelessness is a chronic problem in Kansas City and around the world! Since 1986, we have been providing permanent, transitional and emergency housing assistance to Kansas City’s most vulnerable and each year, we provide services to nearly 2,000 individuals.

In the past 36 years, the mission of Kansas City’s SAVE Inc. has evolved from its initial focus as a hospice for people with HIV/AIDS. These days, SAVE Inc. has a number of programs, but at its core, the mission is to help the vulnerable populations of Kansas City find safe and affordable housing. Every individual that SAVE Inc. serves lives with a disability, including HIV, mental illness, substance abuse, or some combination. In 2022, SAVE Inc. owns 107 units of permanent supportive housing in midtown Kansas City, and the organization is one of the largest processors of federally funding housing vouchers in the metro area, second only to the Housing Authority.

SAVE Inc. also has a program offering emergency assistance such as help with rent or utility payments. Since the COVID-19 pandemic began, those requests have skyrocketed. Pre-pandemic, the group may have fielded 10 calls for emergency assistance in a month. At the height of the pandemic, they received 120 calls in a single day. The organization had to hire additional staff to handle the requests.

One of SAVE Inc.’s newest programs, Pride Haven, was created to fill a gap in services specifically targeted to queer youth. Pride Haven is a 20-bed shelter primarily for LGBTQ+ youth, ages 18 to 24, although other young adults who need a temporary shelter can stay if there are empty beds. The program provides more than just a place to sleep; there’s case management as well. Mental health resources are available, and trans kids are provided with medical care.

There’s data that shows that when a young person hits the streets, if you can’t connect with them within 48 hours, the chances of them becoming victims of a crime or violence or falling into the homeless system permanently increases by 80%. So time is of the essence. These kids, especially young trans women of color, are very susceptible to trafficking, so there’s a lot of danger out there for these kids,” -Blaine Proctor

SAVE, Inc. believes that housing is a basic human right. We work every day toward a world free of homelessness and discrimination in housing.

Kickball Basic Rules

1. No Bunting!

a. A bunt is when the kicker intentionally leaves the ball short by tapping or not following through on purpose

b. SUCKING IS NOT BUNTING!

c. This call is entirely at the discretion of the Umpire

2. To record an out you must strike out the opposing kicker, catch the ball, tag or hit the runner with the ball while he/she is not on base, or touch the base on a force play before the runner is on the base.

a. Hitting an opposing player above the shoulders is not allowed. The Runner will be considered safe is this happens UNLESS the player is sliding, diving, etc…

3. There are NO leadoffs! You must wait until the ball is kicked to run. Leaving before the ball is kicked is an automatic out.

4. When kicking your plant foot must be behind the home plate line. It can be on the base. It can be slightly over the base. It cannot be completely over the base! This is an automatic out!

5. There is no courtesy foul! If you have 2 strikes a foul kick is considered a 3rd strike and an out!

6. You must tag on a caught ball and not on the first touch! If you leave on the first touch this is an early tag, and there is a force play on the base you left early from.

7. When the pitcher gains possession of the ball on the pitcher’s mound and is not attempting to make a play on the runner(s) the play is considered dead. All Runners must stop advancing. If a runner is more than halfway to the next base he/she can have that base

8. In the event of an overthrow the runner is allowed one extra base. The runner must be ¾ of the way to a base to get an extra base. (if the runner is ¾ of the way to 2nd base at the time of the over throw the runner gets 3rd base.)

9. The ball must be pitched underhand. Slow and easy is recommended. The ball must bounce twice before the plate or it is considered a ball, and if the bottom of the ball is above the midpoint of the kicker’s shin it is considered a ball.

10. ALL defensive players must stay behind the pitching line until the ball is kicked. The runner will receive a free base if any defensive player charges home plate.

11. Minimum of 8 to play. Maximum of 10 in the field.
