Inspired by the quote: “Every child is a different kind of flower, and all together, make this world a beautiful garden.” With each child creating flowers, together they form a beautiful arrangement. One of the flower processes is cutting strips of colored paper with cut lines and twisting it around a pencil for a tubular flower. For a rosette, you cut a spiral and then twist around a pencil. Glue the bottoms or any parts of the flower if you want it tighter. Other flowers and the leaves were just cut out and layered. Some kids made up their own designs. |

Aloha Island was an evolving piece of art. We had a large canvas to repurpose and initially thought to do a mosaic using broken crayons. We built the frame to help contain the project, but started to realize that the crayons would be too heavy. After a lot of experimentation, the project moved to sand art. Each student helped with at least one section of the final piece. Modge Podge was brushed onto the canvas, and then the sand was poured on and gently tamped down into place. A final seal was put on to help keep the sand in place. Students helped with mixing some colors and did a great job learning this technique that was new to all of us. We hope that this piece brings the spirit of aloha to the place it finds to call home! |

After a "rehearsal", students worked quickly to place natural materials and transparencies printed with backgammon, connect 4, tic-tac-toe and checkers on the fabric. The 6th graders traced their own hands on plain, white paper. The students then traced their hands onto the Shrinky Dink Paper. They used colored pencils to add color and designs. Names were added to everyone’s pinky fingers so we could find them once we shrank them! We then placed them in the oven and the hands shrank to the tiny, delicate size they are now. |
