Luis Maes was born in Bogota, Colombia, raised in Arlington, VA, and has lived in a handful of countries in Latin America. Although his 5 ft. 8 in. frame dashed any hopes of professional sports stardom, he has a passion for using the incredible power of sport and baseball to unite and move our community forward.
This passion led to his current role as Vice President of Community Impact for the Kansas City Royals, where he leads the Community Impact Department which includes Royals Charities, the Urban Youth Academy, and Royals Hall of Fame and Ballpark Experiences. Luis helps unleash the Royals’ unique assets and capabilities to make a positive and sustainable impact in the KC Metro in areas including healthy and active communities, literacy & education, military & veterans and more.
Prior to joining the Royals, Luis was the head of Gobal Social Impact at Electronic Arts (EA), where he built an environmental, social, and governance (ESG) function at the company. Before that, Luis led efforts to create Nike’s global social impact team and strategy – which has been recognized as an industry-leading approach and resulted in game-changing impact for communities where Nike employees work, live and play.
Luis has also had stints leading corporate responsibility efforts at Walmart in Bentonville, Ark. and as a Foreign Service Officer with the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), serving his country at U.S. Embassies abroad.
Luis is a proud husband to Margaret, and father to Santiago, Camila, and Lucho. He holds a bachelor’s degree from the University of Virginia and master’s degrees from Harvard University and Duke University. He serves on faculty for the Sports and Entertainment Impact Collective and is a member of both The Alumni Society and Kansas City Tomorrow.
