Larry Moffet was born in Denver, Colorado, and graduated from high school in Gladstone, New Jersey. He came to Maine in 1962 and began painting landscapes during the summer months. He moved to Deer Isle full-time, following three years of college, in 1972. To support himself financially, he worked as a wooden boat carpenter from 1973 to now. In 1979, he began lobstering in the summer and fall, which gave him the freedom to pursue his artistic interests in the winter and spring. He works with a variety of media, including oils, watercolors, pastels, woodcuts, cut paper, and silver. In 1992, he met William Holst, a retired art professor, who began tutoring him in the principles of modernism, changing his artistic vision. Currently, Mr. Moffet's artwork is in several private collections in the U.S. and abroad.

Known as a Sailor's Valentine, shell craft in a glass-fronted octagonal wooden box was a popular gift from a sailor returning from a sea voyage in the late 19th century one is unique. The box itself is made in Maine from sustainable cherry wood. The decorative materials were all gathered from the beaches of our IHT preserves. Some shell species are no longer common due to changes in the Gulf of Maine and the invasion of green crabs. Naturalist, writer, and artist Marnie Reed Crowell created this Sailor's Valentine for the benefit of Island Heritage Trust. May it always remind you of pleasant hours on our preserves.

In 1985, Terrell made a radical shift in his life and career, moving to Rochester, New York, to start a full-time career as a fine art landscape photographer. For the next ten years, he traveled the east coast of America following the seasons, photographing and exhibiting his photographs at over 40 outdoor arts and crafts shows a year. In 1987, on one of his photographic expeditions to Maine, he discovered Deer Isle on the mid-coast of Maine, which is known as the Downeast Maine region. It did not take long for him to decide that this was where he wanted to stake his claim in the world of photography, and he made Deer Isle his home. The reputation of Terrell's photographic images continued to grow in Maine and nationally. His work is collected widely and represented in many galleries throughout the United States as well as major museum, corporate, and private collections worldwide. A collection of his images titled  MAINE: The Seasons was published by Knopf/Random House Publishing in 2001. It contains 125 images of his Maine photographs with essays by Pulitzer Prize-winning authors Richard Ford and Richard Russo, as well as Anne Beattie and Elizabeth Strout._ This highly successful book is in its fourth printing._ Terrell was an interview guest on the nationally broadcasted PBS Charlie Rose, which aired in 2002, regarding his photographic images of Maine and book  Maine: The Seasons. Terrell currently lives in Fort Collins, Colorado, where he photographs the landscape of the Rocky Mountains and the American West, as well as photographing Central Mexico's people and culture.
