Original hand colored Pen, Ink and Marker Drawing. 1999. Framed and signed by artist. Measurements: 5x8 inches Artist: Ademola Olugebefola Ademola Olugebefola, born Bedwick L.Thomas in St. Thomas, Virgin Islands, came to the states when he was five years old. He moved to Harlem in 1966 right in the middle of the Civil Rights Movement where he found art to be extremely liberating. Ademola and the WEUSI Artist Collective were warriors in the Black Arts Movement and strongly believed in the philosophy “Black Art for Black People.” He expressed in an interview in 2012 that “there was a need to deconstruct stereotypes that had still been lingering since enslavement” and so it was his and the Black Arts Movement's mission to set out to “beautify women, regalize the black man and our images, promote the culture the beauty of brilliance of color within the African tradition.” Ademola Olugebefola is one of the founding members of the WEUSI Artist Collective. Weusi, a Swahili word meaning blackness, was established in Harlem in 1965. Black artist, like Ademola, decided to take control of their image and come together to represent themselves in their art, by using iconic images and symbols from Africa, and working collectively by establishing galleries to exhibit and sell their creations. Pieced quilt with free motion quilting, organza, applied to canvas; illusion tulle and organza overlay. Measurements: 24 x 16 Artist: Andi Cullins About the Artist I consider myself the Grandma Moses of fiber art. I waited 60 years to follow my dreams.  Using commercial fabrics, ethnic prints, and my own hand-dyed materials, as well as reclaimed and recycled western materials, I create each image; an original product of my own imagination or my interpretation of nature.  Methods include traditional quilting, raw-edge appliqué, and fabric mosaics and collage.  Fabrications can include fabric, strings, ribbons, buttons, cheesecloth, beads, tulle, lace, suede, and leather with other recycled materials.  I bring to my work a uniquely bi-racial, African American point of view.  My works include re-imaginations of iconic Christian images, familiar, ordinary images, and natural phenomena, using African wax prints, Aboriginal prints, and other ethnic fabric, which I mix with western fabric. My objective is to use African and ethnic prints in a way that “normalizes” them within the context of the images, as a part of the whole rather than as indicia of ethnicism itself.   I draw on the typically intense color pallets and patterns of ethnic fabrics to provide excitement for the eye and to convey emotion.  *Donated by artist.

Using a multitude of artistic mediums, FAE explores his passion for the arts through shapes and colors in order to add a creative twist to his lived experiences. “I’ve been into art my entire life but after the Scope Art Fair in 2019...it was game on,” he said. Art has a way of teaching people and inviting people in. Having Black people in art spaces is life changing for many. FAE’s career path is a testament to what can be when invited into art spaces. “I was there with my brothers [from] the Bishop Gallery and something clicked for me...I haven’t looked back since,” he added. Specializing in FEELS abstract art, Free Enlightened Elevating Loving + Soulful, he is able to express and interpret the admirers point of view. As an artist in the early stages of their career, FAE hasn’t experienced marginalization at the hands of industry elites or those aspiring to be one. However, FAE is prepared to deal with it by incorporating meditation and reflection in his practice. My experience thus far has been great. I’m able to create with love and have my work received with love. [so] I'm going to continue creating in love and just enjoy my journey,” he said. Drawing inspiration from a few people like Ashley Raeneil and Demont Pinder who showed him creativity can manifest into something tangible. As well as the Bishop Gallery who stepped up to show him the hustle and what goes on behind the scenes of the art world. “I feel if Black artist just keep on creating and staying true to their message..the narrative would be there...I am Black [therefore] all my work speaks to the lived experience of Black people by default,” he said proudly.  *Donated by Artist
