Nickel & Nickel Rock Cairn Cabernet Sauvignon 2016. It may be early, but the 2016 Nickel & Nickel Rock Cairn could very well make it into my top 10 wines of the year. I was blown away with its performance in tasting through the 2016 lineup of the Nickel & Nickel Cabs. TASTING NOTES: This wine shows outstanding clarity. Its aromas and flavors of cassis, mineral, and savory herbs deserves to be paired with a well-marbled, seared ribeye topped with minced shallots. Origin: Napa Valley, CA. W.W. Rating: 96 points. Chateau Montelena Estate Cabernet Sauvignon, 2016. "Early budbreak and a warm spring hinted at another early harvest, similar to 2015. However, after a turbulent and blustery May, the summer weather settled into a fairly typical and moderate routine with consistently warm days and only few noticeably hot stretches. Mild conditions prevailed during July and August leading to ample hangtime for the fruit as ripening progressed slowly and evenly across the Estate." Origin: Napa Valley, CA. Joseph Phelps Backus Cabernet Sauvignon 2008. The 2002 Cabernet Sauvignon Backus Vineyard is a massive, youthful blockbuster with an opaque purple color as well as firm tannins (despite the general openness and ripeness of the 2002 Napa Cabernets). Almost overly rich, it has a long evolution ahead of it given its firm tannins and off-the-charts concentration and extract. One has to admire this cuvee for its extraordinary structure and multidimensional personality, but at present, even with airing, the primary aromas of new oak, loamy soil, graphite, incense and black fruits are all one can expect. In the mouth, the wine remains brutally tannic, but there is enough stuffing to easily balance out the wine’s structure. It is a young, possibly great wine for the ages, and I would not hesitate to put my money where my mouth is. This 2002 should be absolutely amazing in 25-30 years. Robert Parker Rating: 96 points. Taylor Fladgate Vintage Porto 2016. Deep purple with a narrow magenta rim. Notes of pure, intense woodland fruit with lively accents of green apple, plum and raspberry. Around this core of bright fruit is a heady aura of herbs. Exotic notes of cedar wood and jasmine provide an additional dimension of complexity. Sinewy, linear tannins that integrate seamlessly into the mid palate and re-emerge to hold the wine in a confident grip. Massolino Barolo 2016 + Castello Romitorio Brunello di Montalcino 2016. Barolo: A stream of pure, juicy cherry fruit is at the heart of this red, along with mineral, tobacco and wild herb notes. Firm and tightly wound, with a matrix of dense, refined tannins for support. All the elements are in the right proportions, this just needs time. (BS) *#7 Wine of the Year 2020*. Origin: Piedmont, Italy. Brunello: 95 Points. There is something intoxicating and invigorating about this wine: a high nose of oak and fruit with accents of cherries, violets and pomegranates. There are also hints of earth and, with aging, shades of sage and soy. Sensual! Origin: Tuscany, Italy. Generously donated by: Tom Briggs. Roederer Estate - L'Ermitage Brut 1.5L MAGNUM. Wine Enthusiast Luxurious and layered, this nicely mature wine has a broad range of complex aromas and flavors, from fig to mushroom to butter and baking spices that ride a supple texture and linger for a long finish. The very fine bead, plush texture and a creamy richness that verges on sweetness are practically irresistible. Robert Parker Rating: 97 points. Origin: Napa Valley, CA. Abreu Cappella 2013. The Cappella, which usually has at least 35-30% Cabernet Franc in it, looks absolutely fabulous now that the 2013 Cappella is finally in bottle. They only made about 206 cases of it, so it’s a small cuvée from this vineyard on the back streets of St. Helena. It displays sweet espresso notes, loads of white chocolate, blackberry, Asian spice and incense. It is full-bodied and opulent, with the tannins surprisingly silky and well-disguised, which is somewhat unusual in this vintage of extraordinary power and density. This is a 35- to 50-year wine. Robert Parker Rating: 96 points. Origin: Napa Valley, CA. Generously donated by: James "Eddie" Cheneweth. Disclaimer: (This item is subject to California sales tax). |

Rivers-Marie Lore Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon 2014. Another magnificent wine from the Oakville corridor on the hills near Dalla Valle and the Pedregral Vineyard of David Ramey. Wonderful notes of fruitcake, cedar wood, spice box, blackcurrant and blackberry along with espresso and spice jump from the glass of this terrific wine that is powerful, concentrated and multidimensional, but still somewhat youthful and backward. Give it 3-4 years of bottle age and drink it over the following 25-30 years. Robert Parker Rating: 97 points. Origin: Napa Valley, CA. Generously donated by: James "Eddie" Cheneweth. Mas de Boislauzon - Chateauneuf-du-Pape Cuvee du Quet 2007. A huge, monster of a wine is the 2007 Chateauneuf du Pape Quet! This Grenache-dominated beauty offers crazy amounts of black currants, black licorice, beef blood and Provencal herbs in a thick, unctuous, full-bodied yet ethereal and seamless package. And while it carries an incredible amount of fruit and texture, it remains graceful and lively on the palate, with no hard edges, sweet, still present tannin and a huge finish. This is a tour de force in wine that has another two decades of longevity. Robert Parker Rating: 100 points. Origin: Rhone, France. Generously donated by: James "Eddie" Cheneweth. Arnot-Roberts Trousseau 2015 (2 bottles). The 2015 Trousseau (North Coast) is delicate, aromatic and nicely lifted in the glass. Savory herbs, dried flowers, dried cherries and orange peel are some of the signatures. Drink this attractive, mid-weight red over the next few years. The 2015 is ethereal, gracious and also a touch eccentric. In 2015, most of the fruit was from Luchsinger, Arnot-Roberts' original Trousseau source, as there was no yield from the Bohan Ranch. Because of that, the 2015 is a bit light in color. Robert Parker Rating: 91 points. Origin: North Coast, CA. Generously donated by: James "Eddie" Cheneweth. Larkmead Cabernet Sauvignon 2014. The 2014 “White Label” red wines include the 2014 Cabernet Sauvignon Napa, which is a beauty. An elegant, Pauillac-style wine with notes of chocolate, cedar wood, fruitcake, unsmoked cigar tobacco and underbrush, it is dense, full-bodied and rich. It is a blend of 93% Cabernet Sauvignon and 7% Petit Verdot aged 19 months in 75% new French oak. There are 2,705 cases of this wine, which finished at 14.7% natural alcohol. It should drink well for 20-25 years, but there’s no reason to defer your gratification. James Suckling Rating: 93 points. Origin: Napa Valley, CA. Generously donated by: James "Eddie" Cheneweth.
