About the Artwork: The American Flag: A Visual "Re-Mix" Inspired by Warholian pop art practices of the 60s Cey's practice involves dismantling various imagery and paper elements into "re-mixed" collage paintings that incorporate advertising snippets, comic books, news articles and references to popular culture. Within his practice, he often focuses on relationships of transformation and discovery, and does so by methodically disrupting and altering the original state of familiar symbols and imagery. Adam's mixed media flag series evolved from his Trusted Brand series, which revisits iconic logos and symbols of Adams's youth as a way of reconnecting the present with the past. Cey's infatuation with the American flag began as a tribute to one his greatest inspirations- the lauded American artist Jasper Johns. The series displays altered versions of the iconic American Flag that Adams has embedded with various media and found-clippings, inviting viewers to re-examine a familiar symbol of traditional American values re-created using fiber papers from India and Nepal, art magazines, contemporary news clippings and hand-tinted papers. The series is intended to spark dialogue the leads to questions of identity. Adams created this series in collaboration with master screen printer Gary Lichtenstein.
