This one of a kind, fine fiber art piece was crafted by Shelly Hoist using palm leaves gathered in Kona on the island of Hawaiʻi. Each sheath is sustainably harvested from natural fallen leaves from beautiful, giant palm trees, bringing the warmth of the tropics into everyday life. Echo II is a standing vessel completed with a museum quality encaustic wax finish (an ancient preservation process using beeswax and Damar tree resin that fuses into the plant fibers when heated). It can be buffed to a shine or left to a matte finish. Standing vessels differ from "basketry" in that the palm sheath fiber has been attached to a wood base, and then covered and embellished. It can be used as a stand alone art object or as a vase to hold fresh or dried flowers. The flat wood base provides stability and can easily be weighted inside to weather a strong breeze blowing through your home. Shelley Hoist is an award winning natural plant artist on Hawaiʻi Island. Her mission is to help people feel connected to our natural world through the beauty and texture of plant fibers, and also to help others find their own innate creativity. She is self taught and has been working in this medium for over 25 years.  Dimensions: 6.75" high / base is 3" wide / top is 2" wide

Nestled in the heart of Historic Kailua Village, sits Hulihe‘e Palace, the beautiful two-story oceanfront, vacation home of Hawai‘i’s ali‘i built in 1838. Explore the beautifully furnished rooms of Hawai‘i’s first Palace, as you learn about the Palace’s former residents from Governor Kuakini, to Princess Ruth Ke‘elikōlani, King Kamehameha IV and Queen Emma, King Kalākaua and Queen Kapi‘olani, and brothers Prince David Kawananākoa and Prince Jonah Kūhiō Kalaniana‘ole. Next escape to Hānaiakamalama, or the Queen Emma Summer Palace, and discover this hidden treasure located five minutes from widely-known ‘Iolani Palace. A special book bundle, featuring Daughters of Hawai‘i publications including Emma, Beloved Queen of Hawai‘i, Na Lani Kaumaka, and Dining with the Daughters: Second Helping.   Emma, Beloved Queen of Hawai‘i by Barbara Del Piano, skillfully commemorates the life and times of Queen Emma. A dexterous balance of in-depth research and intimately drawn details chronicle her life as a young royal at the Chiefs’ Children’s School, and her marriage to Alexander Liholiho, Kamehameha IV. Known intimately as Kaleleonālani, she experienced great joy and endured deep sorrow in her lifetime. Rising above the tragedies of the early passings of her only child and devoted husband, she made many lasting contributions for the betterment of her people for which she will ever be revered. An evocative account, the humanitarian accomplishments of Queen Emma are extraordinary in and of themselves. The true charm of this book comes from a descriptive pairing of vibrant illustrations.   Na Lani Kaumaka: Daughters of Hawai‘i, a Century of Historic Preservation by Barbara Del Piano celebrates the history and accomplishments of the historic preservation society.   Dining with the Daughters is a collection of recipes and historical anecdotes from members of the Daughters of Hawai‘i. The flickering glow of a bare flame illuminated the faces of Hawai‘i’s Ali‘i while they dined in the comfort of their Palaces. Lips embracing ambrosial dishes, each sip of drink syncopated with the lap of the ocean waters as they dined at Hulihe‘e Palace or with the flow of the waters running through the ‘auwai at the Queen Emma Summer Palace. Today many of the artifacts within the Palaces relate back to the art of dining, and portray the progression from ‘āina to pākaukau. Like the eclectic collection of artifacts, the cuisine of Hawai‘i tells of a sophisticated palate with a distinct Hawaiian flavor and appeal. Filled with classic recipes, this cookbook speaks of a bygone era while sharing the culinary history of Hawai‘i.   Item will be available for pickup from Oct. 9 - Oct. 15 at Queen Emma Summer Palace. If shipping is required, the cost will be the winner's responsibility.
