The pink tower is, perhaps, the most iconic symbol of Montessori education. It consists of ten, solid pink cubes size 1 cm cubed through 10 cm cubed. The tower appeals to the young child’s sense of order and allows for the development of logical sequencing. Repeated use of the pink tower trained the visual sense as well as the baric sense as the cubes decrease in weight as the tower rises. Working with the pink tower prepares the child for math concepts that follow in the elementary years. It provides an introduction to the decimal system. In addition, the multiplication tables, the decanomials, algebraic squaring, square root, cubing, and cube root are all based on the foundation established when the child works with the pink tower.
