Every week, we deliver healthy, nutritious food to kids living in food insecurity. Our menu is comprised of kid-friendly and shelf-stable food that’s higher in protein and 40% lower in sugar than typical weekend ‘backpack’ programs.
Backpack Friends began as a volunteer program in 2004, feeding 12 elementary school children in the Pflugerville area. Today the program delivers thousands of meal kits to children in Travis, Williamson, and Burnett counties, serving more than 30 campuses across 10 school districts. And because overhead costs are underwritten by area business leaders and private individuals, 100% of monies donated to the general fund can go straight to putting food in the tummies of children at risk.
Because their basic needs are taken care of, children in the Backpack Friends program are experiencing fewer instances of anxiety, depression and bullying, and are better equipped for an increase in academic performance and peer relationships.
