West Side Story is considered by many to have been a turning point in musical theatre. The sophisticated music, extended dance breaks, and socially conscious storyline was in many ways revolutionary for its day. And while the musical may originally have been set in 1950s New York City, the story of immigrants fighting for a place in their own community is one which still resonates today, even here in Waco, TX.
The two-Tony-winning musical is inspired by William Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet, set in a diverse neighborhood run by two rival gangs, the Sharks, whose members are from Puerto Rico, and the Jets, European immigrants who believe the territory to be rightfully theirs. When Tony, a former member of the Jets and best friend of the gang's leader Riff, and Maria, the sister of the Sharks' leader Bernardo, fall in love, things quickly reach a head.
This staged concert is sure to be a musical tribute that you won't forget. Set in the stunning STORIES building, there is no better way to celebrate the start of Hispanic Heritage Month than by hearing revitalized classics such as "Tonight," "America," "I Feel Pretty," and so many more.
