After School Community Classes Fall 2021 - Acting, Hip Hop, and Creative Writing

After School Community Classes

Children and Youth Acting Class

Open to all ages. Mondays 4:30-6:30 starting September 13. Taking place at Brazos Theatre, 7524 Bosque Blvd.

This class will be geared toward learning Mary Poppins, Jr.

Through working on the show, students will learn the fundamentals of theatre--acting, singing, dancing, set design, and more. Everyone in the class will be involved in the production. Auditions will take place in class, and the semester will be spent rehearsing the show, which is to take place in December.

Instructor: Trent Sutton

Trent has been teaching children's theatre for many years. His most recent production was Seussical Jr, which took place this last summer. Other productions he has put on here in Waco include Alice in Wonderland Jr, Lion King Jr, and more.

Youth Hip Hop Class

Open to ages 10+ (with exceptions made upon request). Thursdays 4:30-6:00 starting September 9. Taking place at Good Neighbor House, 2301 Colcord Ave.

In this class, students will learn the fundamentals of hip hop. They will be showcased for friends and family, as well as have the opportunity to participate in the chorus of Mary Poppins Jr, using their skills in hip hop to join the acting class in the production.

Instructor: Kayla Hill

Kayla is a long-time Waco native. She also teaches hip hop at Baylor University and at Mission Waco and is excited to continue to share her passion for dance with even more students.

Youth Creative Writing Class (Poetry)

Open to ages 10+ (with exceptions made upon request). Thursdays 4:30-6:00 starting September 9. Taking place at Good Neighbor House, 2301 Colcord Ave.

In this class, students will learn a wide variety of styles in which they may express themselves creatively. From free verse to haikus, from visual poetry to spoken word, the opportunities for students to learn are endless. Throughout the course of this class, students will create a portfolio of poems, and by the end of the year, the class will collectively publish a collection of poems for friends and families to purchase as a memento of their accomplishments.

Instructor: Trent Sutton

Trent is a poet and playwright himself, as well as an editor who has worked with a number of writers in a number of genres.

Adult Hip Hop Class

Open to ages 18+. Thursdays 6:30-8:00 starting September 9. Taking place at Good Neighbor House, 2301 Colcord Ave.

In this class, students will learn the fundamentals of hip hop. A fun, high-energy class, this is perfect for adults of all experience levels. There will be an opportunity to perform, but it will not be required. This is an incredible opportunity to learn a new skill, get active, and meet some other creative people!

Instructor: Kayla Hill

Kayla is a long-time Waco native. She also teaches hip hop at Baylor University and at Mission Waco and is excited to continue to share her passion for dance with even more students.

Other General Information

For the time being, students are required to bring their masks to all classes for the safety of teachers and students involved. There will be some activities that are distanced, and masks won't be required during those times, but it is important that students have masks with them for those times when distancing isn't possible. As the semester progresses, we will update this policy as needed.

There are limited scholarships available. If the cost of our classes is prohibitive in any way, please don't hesitate to reach out. We work hard to ensure that as many people as who want to participate in our classes are able to.
