About Swope Art Museum

A Brief History

Sheldon Swope’s vision began in 1903 with the belief our community would be enriched profoundly from an art museum, accessible to all. Ahead of his time, Sheldon Swope stipulated the Museum would always be “free of charge” and to always have a female seated on the Board of Managers. Ten years after his death in 1939, the first Board of Managers was established and works of art began to be collected. Since opening its doors to the public in 1942, this unique museum has undergone significant development. From becoming the first accredited museum in Indiana, to undergoing extensive renovations, and to expanding programming for artist outreach engagement, the Swope continues to provide the opportunity to experience art within our community. The members serving now remain dedicated to free admission for all and provide gratitude to all its museum members, event attendees, and local sponsors for the Mardi Gras Party.
