For the unrepresented defendant, Judges assigned to landlord-tenant cases have at their disposal a panel of volunteer attorneys to help see to it no eviction case moves forward without legal representation during an eviction hearing. Three-hour shifts are available for attorneys to cover every Monday and Thursday from 8:30 am to 5:30 pm. Lawyers agree to handle their three-hour shift virtually, assisting the court with settling disputes in chat rooms and defending motions filed against the defendant.

3 Hour Shift - Housing Advocate

Housing advocates may be assigned to eviction defense cases the day the case is scheduled to be heard in court.  The volunteer attorney is allowed into the virtual courtroom during his or her shift waiting for direction from a judge to be assigned to a particular defendant at which time a chat room may be assigned for the attorney and defendant to discuss defenses and a possible settlement. The attorney and client will return to the court within a specified time to report the status of the conference and to determine the outcome of the case.
