| Peter Kastner's passion for Ossabaw Island and the opportunity for photography started a few years ago when he volunteered for the Butterfly Alliance of the Atlantic Flyway annual fall count on Ossabaw Island. Peter attended a photography workshop this past spring that focused on shooting the Milky Way . He was able to capture the changes of the light on the South End Beach. | Betsy Cain, Savannah artist, shared her artist statement. The use of the color indigo has been part of my work for some time now. I remember seeing the film Daughters of the Dust by Julie Dash when it first came out in 1991. That film gave me a profound understanding and deeper comprehension of the low country, the significance of that color, its history and the people who grew, harvested and created the dye. It altered how I viewed where I live. The process of working with a limited palette (that glorious indigo oil) and generous amounts of turpentine has summoned the forms to suggest a figurative state. If you look closely, the marks are an approximation of the body or the torso or the head. It’s the proximity to what we know that creates the acceptance of a figurative form even as we search for the definition of it. I love this visual ability of ours to fill in the blanks with limited information and then to imagine an indigo queen. The work is indigo oil on yupo paper, it measures 21” X 27” framed. | Cora Ennis Morris is photo/encaustic mixed media artist. Over the summer she launched “Before the Wax”, which is a curated, fine art print line. The concept was a natural fit as it’s already a part of her photo encaustic process, but stops just shy of the wax application. Quite simply, it’s a digital photo taken on location, digitally manipulated, and printed using pigmented inks on archival fine art paper. | Debra Shea visited Ossabaw Island in 2021. During this visit to Ossabaw Island the group was served delicious tea and cocktails made from the leaves of the Yaupon Holly. This is the teapot's inspiration. The pot measures 8"x8"x10". Teapot created using Ossabaw Island sweetgrass and North Carolina pine needles. Removable lid topped with driftwood and seashell, also from the island. Coiled with black artificial waxed sinew, using the spiral wheat stitch and fern stitch. Added spout, braided handle, and footer. Meandering pine needle tendrils formed by splitting coils. A bit about the artist: I am mostly self-taught in pine needle basketry. About 25 years ago I participated in a one-day class in coiling pine needles for baskets. I found it interesting to make something beautiful as well as functional from nature's cast-offs of needles and cones, but I didn't pursue it. Years later we bought an old farmhouse with longleaf pines on the property. This inspired me to seriously take up this craft. There is much involved prior to even beginning a basket. Needles are harvested, triaged, washed, and dried. They can be dyed, fumed, painted, glycerined, or left natural. Once made, the end product can be left as is, or a protective coating of urethane or beeswax applied. Often the baskets have a mind of their own, and what I envisioned creating at the start will turn out differently in the end. To me, coiled baskets are a reminder that life's journey doesn’t always follow a straight path, but that can often lead to something even better! Happy Bidding! Saturday August 26, 2023 six guests will join Fran and John on this magical day on Ossabaw Island. Depart 8:00 am from Delegal Creek Marina on Skidaway Island, just outside of Savannah. After a 30-minute boat ride across Ossabaw Sound, arrive on Ossabaw Island , then travel by pick up truck to the beach to learn about turtle hatchlings. | Judi Crisp painted this watercolor. Her framed work measures 12" X 14.5". The painting was based on a photograph by Ed Jenkins, with permission. Hawksbills are named for their narrow, pointed beak. They also have a distinctive pattern of overlapping scales on their shells that form a serrated-look on the edges. These colored and patterned shells make them highly-valuable and commonly sold as "tortoiseshell" in markets. Hawksbills are found mainly throughout the world's tropical oceans, predominantly in coral reefs. They feed mainly on sponges by using their narrow pointed beaks to extract them from crevices on the reef, but also eat sea anemones and jellyfish. Sea turtles are the living representatives of a group of reptiles that has existed on Earth and traveled our seas for the last 100 million years. The turtles that generally nest on Ossabaw Island are the Loggerhead sea turtles; this year over 720 nests were laid, breaking the record for recorded nests! Happy Bidding! | Henry Hoover from White Pine, Tennessee creates these musical instruments. He has provided a canjo songbook and picks. Mr. Hoover is with the group of Tennessee educators who love Ossabaw Island. A canjo is a fretted, single string, acoustic instrument with an American-sourced hardwood body hand rubbed with boiled linseed oil and a Spam can as the resonator. The fretboard is a perfect diatonic scale with flawless dulcimer style fretting and twelve notes or finger positions. The single tuner at the head is a finely crafted Grover guitar tuner. A Spam can is used because the tonal quality and volume is unmatched - there is no finer canjo anywhere. It's bright and loud like a banjo, durable, lightweight, and the most handsome instrument around! Who knew Spam could sound so good? How to Play It is typically held like a banjo or mandolin but may also be played on a table or lap like a dulcimer. Running along the side of the Canjo neck are numbers stamped "1" through "11". This corresponds to the numbers over the words of each song in the Canjo Songbook. The musician simply moves his or her fingers to the different numbers in the song literally playing by numbers. | Laurie Cordaro was inspired by the roseate spoonbills who now make their home seasonally on Ossabaw Island. The roseate spoonbill is a large wading bird known for its pink plumage and distinctive spoon-shaped bill. Its upper neck and back are colored white, while the wings and feathers underneath display the more recognizable light shade of pink. Using its spoon-like bill to scoop prey up from shallow water, the roseate spoonbill's diet typically includes minnows, small crustaceans, insects and bits of plants. They feed in the early morning and evening hours in both fresh and saltwater wetlands. It is believed the roseate spoonbill receives its bright coloring from the pigments of the crustaceans that it eats. Happy Bidding! | Metal and jewelry artist, Barbara Mann, attended the Heritage Day on Ossabaw Island as a guest. This large pendant (2.5" X 2.5") was made by making a mold of the tabby on the wall of the slave/tenant structures on Ossabaw Island. A wax was made from the mold, cast in sterling silver and fabricated into a pendant with stones, ( Sleeping Beauty turquoise, pearl, spiny oyster shell, and Moissanite). | Fran Lapolla, Ossabaw Island Foundation host, has paired a tile with a historic 1926 Ludowici roof tile from Torrey-West house. Fran’s image of the wax lady who greets visitors to the Torrey West house, is transferred onto a tile using the new kiln on Ossabaw Island. Fran wawa intrigued by the Ludowici stamp on the roof tile and wondered about the connection with Ludowici, GA. He contacted the roof tile company and learned about their factory that was located in what became Ludowici, GA. Fran has included historic advertisements for the 1920s tiles. |
