Title: Interconnectedness I: "A, (U)N" (Breathing) Artist: Setsuko Morinoue Year: 2017 Medium: Japanese Calligraphy (sumi ink, freestyle) Dimensions: 13.25" x 17.75" studiosevenfinearts.com *THE FRAME IS INCLUDED IN THE PRICE* About the Artist:  Born in Kanagawa, Japan, Setsuko Morinoue’s interest in the arts began with photography and transformed into a love for the fiber arts, natural dyes, mixed media painting, printmaking and ceramics. She carries a visionary spirit and is one of the founding members of Hōlualoa Foundation for Arts and Culture. In this piece, Morinoue uses her meditational calligraphy practice to share the Iroha, a Japanese poem containing each character of the Japanese syllabary exactly once. The characters in the foreground represent the expanding and contracting sounds of breath through which Morinoue hopes to inspire viewers to remember the importance of using their senses to observe and learn from nature; it is in that practice that meaningful connections are formed.

Barnaby's woodblock print, Resilience, features the ‘alalā, the endangered Hawaiian crow, which serves as a powerful metaphor for hope and change.

Title: Aia lā ‘o Pele Artist: Clayton Amemiya Year: 2021 Medium: Ceramic, multifired anagama Dimensions: 17.5" x 14" x 14" amemiyaceramics.com About the Artist:  With his journey making pottery beginning in 1970s Okinawa, Clayton Amemiya belongs to the artistic lineage of master ceramicist, Hamada Shoji, who was the teacher of Amemiya’s mentor, Seisho Kuniyoshi.  In 1986, Amemiya and Kuniyoshi built the only existing anagama kiln in Hawai‘i. Using local woods such as ʻōhiʻa, kiawe, and koa, each firing of this semi-subterranean kiln lasts over 100 hours, during which the fire has to be constantly tended. This labor-intensive firing produces fly ash which covers areas of the finished pots in a natural glaze. The piece, Aia lā ‘o Pele, demonstrates two of Amemiya’s prominent inspirations, the environment of Hawai'i Island and medieval pottery of Japan. In this classical tsubo (jar) form which was fired for over 200 hours, Amemiya honors Pele’s awe-inspiring presence, energy and beauty.
