Renowned for her innovative use of kapa and hulu, much of Bernice Akamine’s artwork is informed by Hawaiian moʻolelo and history. While earning bachelor and master degrees in glass and sculpture from University of Hawaiʻi, Akamine continued to study Hawaiian art forms such as hulu (feather work), kapa, and lauhala weaving. Akamine’s grandmother, Kaha Halelaʻau a kahuna, Hawaiian healer, descended from generations of healers, and her mother, Audrey Elliott, a lauhala weaver, had a great influence on Akamine’s life trajectory as an artist and cultural practitioner. Akamine’s live auction work Ala Loa: Nuʻuanu, Oʻahu honors this special wahi pana through her detailed drawing of the valley walls on handmade kapa cloth, the framed panel dyed with lepo (earth) from Nuʻuanu, which is stitched and quilted into this square panel. Akamine has contributed to many competitive, invitational, and solo exhibitions. Her work is in the permanent collection of the American Museum of Natural History, New York; Peabody Essex Museum, Massachusetts; Australian Museum, Sydney; and Queensland Art Gallery/Museum of Modern Art, Australia, among other public collections. With his journey making pottery beginning in 1970s Okinawa, Clayton Amemiya belongs to the artistic lineage of master ceramicist, Hamada Shoji, who was the teacher of Amemiya’s mentor, Seisho Kuniyoshi. In 1986, Amemiya and Kuniyoshi built the only existing anagama kiln in Hawai‘i. Using local woods such as kiawe, koa and lychee, each firing of this kiln lasts four days, during which, the fire has to be constantly tended. This labor-intensive firing produces ash which covers areas of the finished pots in a serendipitous and irregularly patterned natural glaze. The title of Amemiya’s work, Līpoa, refers to the prized blade-like seaweed found throughout Hawai‘i, with the piece itself featuring one of Amemiya’s distinct carving techniques which captures the undulating texture, form and movement of mesmeric undersea life. Amemiya’s work is heavily influenced by the Hawai‘i Island environment as well as medieval pottery of Japan, particularly the tsubo (jars) from areas such as Tokoname, Tamba, Shigaraki and Bizen. He has exhibited internationally and throughout Hawai‘i and his work belongs in numerous private and public collections. Known for her large-scale works depicting birds within scenes of luscious landscapes, Volcano-based artist, Margaret Barnaby, has been fascinated by birds since childhood. For her, nature has always been a source of inspiration. Having studied sculpture and metalwork with master metalsmith, Jack Prip, at the Rhode Island School of Design, with a special study of chasing and repousse at Reed & Barton in Taunton, Massachusetts, her attention turned to painting and woodblock printing after thirty years at the jeweler’s bench. This long-time interest in Japanese woodblock prints led Barnaby to study the technique with Hiroki Morinoue at the Donkey Mill Art Center. The process satisfies her love of physical craft and offers the challenges of color, content and composition. Combining traditional Japanese elements with a contemporary Western approach, each work is printed on an etching press from four or more carved plywood plates. Because every print is inked and printed individually by hand, each one is a unique work. Barnaby has exhibited widely with her prizewinning paintings and prints in many collections, including the U.S. Postal Service and the Hawaiʻi State Foundation for Culture and the Arts. Master woodworker and founding member of the Hōlualoa Foundation for Arts & Culture, Gerald Ben, was first artistically inspired in his high school ceramics class. Born and raised in Honolulu, Ben earned a bachelor’s degree in fine arts from the University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa. Moving to Kona in 1981, Ben became an apprentice cabinet-maker and has since become a master craftsman of fine furniture with apprentices of his own. Ben describes his piece, Porcelain Lamp, as being “thrown and altered” through a multi-stage forming process. At the wet stage, hands and fingers work the inside creating the ridges and valleys visible on the piece’s exterior. During the leather hard stage, the surface is further refined by carving, scraping and ribbing to achieve crisp flowing lines. Pierced with a series of holes, the piece is fired in a gas-fired soda kiln to cone 10 and fit with a base made of turned koa wood. His works are in the collections of the Honolulu Museum of Art, the Hawai'i State Foundation on Culture & the Arts, and the Gifu Prefecture Museum in Seki, Japan, among other collections. Micha Croft grew up exploring the rocky coastline of Northern California, hiking in the Sierra Nevada mountains, and drawing and painting the world around her. After earning her Bachelor of Arts degree and teaching credential from UC San Diego, she continued to study various art forms including Japanese brush painting (sumi-e), drawing, printmaking, and book arts. Her interest in Japanese woodblock printing (mokuhanga) led her to the Donkey Mill Art Center. Printed at the Mill under the guidance of Hiroki Morinoue, Stone Circle is based on a drawing created while sketching with Croft’s friend and mentor, Zandra Rhodes. Croft is so grateful to both Morinoue and Rhodes who have always encouraged her to make time and space for art, to experiment, and to explore new techniques. “My artwork is inspired by the poetry of the world around us—in the whisper of clouds, the flow of water, the silence of stones. My hope is to create work that echoes the quiet voice inside us all.” - Micha Croft Title: Stone Circle Artist: Micha Croft Year: 2011 Medium: Monoprint Unframed Dimensions: 22" x 28" *FRAME INCLUDED IN PRICE* |
Outside of his educational background, artist Michael Cutlip considers his art practice, in many ways, to be self-taught. Born and raised in the San Francisco Bay Area, Cutlip’s works showcase urban life as seen through an abstract lens–heavily influenced by graffiti and street art. Since his move to Hawai‘i in 2017, Cutlip’s work has transitioned from heavily collaged works on panel to the simplicity of paint on canvas. Michael Cutlip’s, Electric Rain, is a prime example of his current body of work through which he focuses on the idea of a singular moment. Through his use of stencils and paint on raw canvas, Electric Rain, captures this movement and energy of one moment in time, with repetitive marks evolving into a rich visual experience. “Adhering collage elements to panels on which he can also paint, Cutlip gives just the right heft to his compositions, a balancing act that many who work in this vein never perfect,” The San Francisco Chronicle’s Art Critic, Kenneth Baker, says when describing the work of Hawaii-based artist Michael Cutlip. Michael Cutlip has exhibited his work widely throughout the U.S. and internationally with his work found in numerous public, private and corporate collections of Microsoft, Bloomingdales, Kaiser Permanente, Grand Hyatt SFO, Courtyard Marriott Manhattan, Fairmont Maui, Hilton Waikoloa, among others. Born in Port Chester, New York, a suburb of New York City, Jeff Downing discovered the art of ceramics while majoring in music composition at the State University of New York at Purchase. Drawn to the spirit of experimentation and nonconformity, Downing moved to San Francisco in 1985 and studied with several well-known artists in the San Francisco Bay Area and went on to earn his MFA from San Francisco State University in 1992. Downing has served on the faculty at San Francisco State University for over 25 years and is a Professor of Art and the Head of the Ceramics Area. He has taught ceramics workshops throughout the country, including the Donkey Mill Art Center, where he made this featured work, Ambrosia. “Downing’s work with dog imagery depends on chance discovery of form, but seeks to invoke feelings concerning the human condition and our varied relationship with the natural world. In Jeff Downing’s world view, studying the dog – with all of its expressiveness, intelligence and sensitivity - leads us to a better understanding of the connection between culture and nature.” - from the website of Mission Clay Arts and Industry. Born on Molokai in 1950 and raised on Oʻahu, Roen Hufford has been a student of her mother, Marie McDonald all her life. She was introduced to a variety of art forms as she shadowed her mother from a very young age. She graduated from Castle High School in Kāneʻohe in 1968, attended Pratt Institute and graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in Ceramics from the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa in 1973. Roen began beating kapa in earnest in 2000 under the tutelage and insistence of her mother, Marie McDonald. “As a contemporary kapa maker I honor my kumu and her kūpuna by using traditional materials, tools and methods to beat and decorate barkcloth. Even with so much technology and information to capture our interest and attention, beating kapa for me is essential and basic and speaks to the usefulness and character of the plants whose bark we use.” - Roen Hufford She has participated in solo and group exhibitions and organized and conducted classes, workshops and demonstrations. Her work can be found in numerous private and public collections throughout Hawaiʻi and the world. Title: Kuʻu lei ʻieʻie Artist: Roen Hufford Year: 2021 Medium: Kapa Dimensions: 74" x 21" |
Born in Los Angeles in 1945, Wayne Levin was hooked on photography ever since his father gave him a Brownie camera and a little kit to develop his own film for his 12th birthday. Graduating with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in photography from the San Francisco Art Institute in 1979, Levin attended Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, New York, where, after studying with artists Arthur Freed and Phil Perkis, he received his master’s degree in 1982. This featured work, A Section of Pando, honors one of the largest organisms ever found–an aspen tree clone that originated from a single seed which now covers over 106 acres of land in Utah. Consisting of over 40,000 individual trees grown from shoots of an expanding root system, some specialists believe the future of Pando is uncertain. This series of photographs of Pando is a continuation of Levin’s exploration of the individual which began with his work capturing large schools of akule and evolved to include many kinds of fish schools and flocks of birds. Wayne’s photographs have been exhibited nationally and internationally and belong to the collections of the Museum of Modern Art in New York and the Museum of Photographic Art in San Diego, among many others. Born and raised in Hōlualoa, Hiroki Morinoue received his Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from the California College of Arts and Crafts (now CCA) in 1973. For Morinoue, the landscape of Hawai’i—its light, rocks, skies, and water—has deeply influenced his work alongside the aesthetic of Japanese arts, crafts and landscaped gardens. In this work, Hawaiian Fish Pond, Morinoue uses this narrative format, with strong architectural divisions, to tell a story of water and the life found within. The vertical planes create space for numerous images, symbols and textures which are all elements of water. From the presence of an anchor stone used for fishing to ulua and DNA, this piece evokes complexity of these watery connections through simple forms. Hiroki Morinoue has shown widely in the United States and Japan and his work is represented in the collections of the Honolulu Museum of Art, the Hawai’i State Foundation on Culture and the Arts, Neiman-Marcus in Honolulu and Chicago, Verizon Hawai’i, Achenbach Foundation for Graphic Arts of the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco, and many private collections. Born in Kanagawa, Japan, Setsuko Morinoue’s interest in the arts began through photography in high school and transformed into a love for fiber art in Kusaki and Roketsu-zome, Japanese natural dye with wax resist. Moving to Hawai’i Island in 1970, she began to explore ceramics at the Kona Arts Center in Hōlualoa. Since then, her persistent interest in and appreciation for a wide range of art media led her to clay with paper, mixed media painting and printmaking. In this piece, Rhapsody in D-Minor - Blue, Morinoue uses meditational brush strokes and Japanese characters and symbols to express beauty and harmony by harnessing energy to create a balanced rhythm. Through the spontaneous movement, she aims to conjure the feelings of renewal and hope through darkness subsequently uplifting the spirit of the viewer. During challenging times, Morinoue believes artists need to “bring the light” and emerge from the darkness by creating meaningful work. Morinoue recognizes the power of the arts to unite people of all backgrounds, disciplines and beliefs—from politicians to scientists—the arts enable people to bring their highest positive energy to the table. Born in Ashland, Oregon, Jim Skibby attended school in his home state, graduating from Southern Oregon College in Elementary Education. After getting married to his wife, Sharon, the Skibbys taught in the Grants Pass area until they moved to Hawaiʻi in 1988 when he then taught at Konawaena Elementary School until 2002. Jim has since enjoyed working in stained glass, lauhala weaving, woodworking and has been building ʻukulele for the last ten years. “Tenor ʻUkulele #119 is typical of my ʻukulele work in that it is made from beautiful wood which in this case is koa. It is made with simple, clean lines. I feel that the beauty of a musical instrument is in the wood and it is not necessary to add extra decoration. I think that the magic of making musical instruments is that you can bring the wood to life again with sound.” - Jim Skibby Title: 6-String Tenor ʻUkulele #119 with Case Artist: Jim Skibby Year: 2021 Medium: Koa, abalone Dimensions: 28" x 9" x 3" |
Makiko Yamaguchi has been weaving for over eighteen years and attributes her weaving accomplishments to her many beloved kumu who, according to Yamaguchi, taught her not only how to weave, but how to be humble and have a sense of humor. Her kumu also instilled in her the understanding that weaving can bring happiness and joy into the world. Yamaguchi made this hat to honor the Buffalo Soldiers who served in the all-Black regiments of the U.S. Army. In the early 1900s, Buffalo Soldiers were integral in the construction of Yosemite National Park, as well as building the Kīlauea Iki Trail at Hawaii Volcanoes National Park from 1915 to 1917. This "flat hat" style, originally worn by the Buffalo Soldiers, is now an iconic feature of the uniform worn by United States National Park Service rangers. “The remarkable courage demonstrated by these proud Black soldiers in the face of fierce combat and discrimination in the Army continues to inspire many today. Moved by their story, I wove this pāpale in their honor." Title: Lauhala "Flat Hat" in the Style of the U.S. National Park Service Uniform. This pāpale was made in honor of the Buffalo Soldiers. Son, you like the land? What fo, six cent a pound, better go school, learn somethin Sixty two days no mo rain, Everybody botcha with one gallon water. The water tank pass half way, must save the water to wash the coffee. Present Day Blue sky, birds chirping I can swear I heard the rain falling, not here, though This was a sound that was popular in the fall. But even so, the clouds above sensed a bit of hopefulness As I painted the sky white in it’s years The clouds curdled and formed a pond beyond thought The sound and sense of rain was all i needed to be back again But I stayed only for an absent while, cursing the dust and mildew While the clouds flowed by to dry to sing along, hoping, Hoping for a cleavage of rainbows. www.roseadare.com / @adareart |
