Her work has been exhibited throughout Hawaiʻi, the U.S. and abroad. Cutlip is one of the Donkey Mill's beloved teaching artists who has shared art experiences with hundreds of local keiki. “My art is an expression of my own personal language. Title: Nā Kualapa Artist: Clayton Amemiya Year: 2021 Medium: Ceramic Dimensions: 16" x 23" x 4" amemiyaceramics.com With his journey making pottery beginning in 1970s Okinawa, Clayton Amemiya belongs to the artistic lineage of master ceramicist, Hamada Shoji, who was the teacher of Amemiya’s mentor, Seisho Kuniyoshi. In 1986, Amemiya and Kuniyoshi built the only existing anagama kiln in Hawai‘i. Using local woods such as ʻōhiʻa, kiawe, and koa, each firing of this semi-subterranean kiln lasts over 100 hours, during which the fire has to be constantly tended. This labor-intensive firing produces fly ash which covers areas of the finished pots in a natural glaze. Inspired by the breathtaking landscapes of Kohala—with her ridges and steep pali—Amemiya's work honors this cherished mountain range. |

Title: Somewhere Near and Far, Miloli‘i Gate Artist: Margo Ray Year: 2023 Medium: Gouache, layered papers, hand-cut kozo prints and fibers on panel Dimensions: 20" x 24" x 1.5" @margoshepherdray, margoray.com Margo Ray is a visual artist who engages in printmaking, collage and installation. She holds an MFA from Concordia University in Montréal, Québec, a BA in Studio Arts from University of Hawaiʻi at Hilo, as well as a certificate from Peking University’s summer program in Beijing, China. Born on O’ahu in 1976, Ray was raised on the island of Hawaiʻi and has had the opportunity to travel throughout her life. She has been awarded numerouse artist residencies and her work has been exhibited widely in Hawaiʻi and abroad. Ray is co-owner of Island Eclectic, an art handling business, and lives in Waimea, Hawaiʻi, in the ahupuaʻa of Puʻukapu with her husband and their two children. "I reconstruct landscapes based on my energetic or spiritual interpretation of a place, bringing attention to the multiplicity of marks made on a location, by plants, animals, and humans alike. In my work I have established an iconic language inspired by the rural Hawaiian landscape, utilizing collage, print media, and installation. This iconography populates surreal geographies of beauty, color and line in an ongoing narrative of decay and abundance. Using the allegory of landscape, I explore notions of displacement, vulnerability and authenticity as well as my relationship to natural and supernatural worlds; drawing attention to the complicated triangulation of relationships between man, land, and animal and notions of invasiveness and belonging." - Margo Ray |

Title: Yutaka Ni Ikiru; An experience hosted by Setsuko Morinoue and ‘Ohana Artist: Setsuko Morinoue studiosevenfinearts.com Born in Kanagawa, Japan, Setsuko Watanabe Morinoue’s interest in the arts began with photography and transformed into a love for the fiber arts, natural dyes, mixed media painting, printmaking and ceramics. She carries a visionary spirit and is one of the founding members of Hōlualoa Foundation for Arts and Culture which established the Donkey Mill Art Center. In this once-in-a-lifetime experience, six participants will be invited to join artist and co-founder of the Donkey Mill Art Center, Setsuko Morinoue, to experience her philosophy of living and creating, in a wabi sabi style intimate setting in her ceramic studio located in the heart of a 100 year old family coffee farm that is slowly transforming into a diversified ecosystem for the next generation. Setsuko will prepare a ceramic focused experience beginning with a tour of the farm, brewing and drinking of farm harvested tea, and then move into a ceramic hand building experience. The half day experience will close with a shared lunch of hiyashi some or cold noodles, a classic summer dish in Japan. Each participant will leave with a soba-choko & tori-zara (small bowl and plate), in the style of Setsuko’s signature blue and white aesthetics. Handmade pinch pots will be fired and picked up on a later date. This experience is scheduled for the months of August through November 2024 with some flexibility and will be coordinated with the Program Director and the lucky winner of the experience. |
