Let’s give CHUM a community hug!

What does comfort mean to you? To me, it means the security of knowing I have unchallenged access to the basics of food, clothing and shelter. I take these for granted, always have. Until recently, I have never considered how I would get through a day without a meal, where I would wash my clothing (or store it for that matter), what were my options for a safe and warm place to sleep each night?

I saw some of the most extreme examples of homelessness when I was in Portland, Oregon last spring for work. I had looked forward to this trip. I could hardly wait to see the beauty of this state during our planned "tourist" time. Although we did get to see the beautiful Multnomah Waterfall, what I brought back were images of homeless encampments, panhandling and a significant amount of mental illness. My initial feelings were of discomfort, and as a nurse, dismay with overwhelming thoughts of how I couldn't help. So, I had feelings of discomfort and helplessness. Lately, I've been thinking about these feelings in a much different way. I was able to get on a plane and return home to comfort, family and friends, support. There are many people in Duluth who are physically uncomfortable sleeping in a park, under an overpass or even in a shelter; worrying about where the next meal is coming from; how they will get their prescriptions filled and paid for; where will they store their clothing and other belongings.

This opportunity to support CHUM, and therefore members of our Duluth community, will not only help provide these basic human necessities for some of Duluth's most vulnerable residents, but also a chance to join together with my friends in this important community advocacy. Please walk with me, outside our comfort zone, and join my team!
